CivicCamp 5!

We want your help in organizing our big CivicCamp 5 event! You can pitch an idea to us to have your own mini-workshop/station at our CivicCamp 5 event (up to 10 are available), or you can suggest a group in Calgary that you think would be worthwhile in having at our event. If you like, you can also pitch us your idea to info@civiccamp.org as well!

What do you want to learn about and talk about at CivicCamp 5?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Homeless and poverty and improving quality of life (mobility, health), reduction of crime.

We should invite the Calgary Homeless Foundation and other poverty reduction aid groups to raise the quality of life for our less fortunate. Such as women aid, especially advocacy for the mentally ill (example helping the homeless attain the treatment so they can progress in life). Advice from the police to better protect the vunerable. Provide alternatives to the so called "thug" life and disarming violent crime...

    • Civic camp as a forum for youth groups, especially at risk youths.

To provide a future for our young we should allow them all sorts of ways to practice and develop their skills by encouraging and enabling their projects. Especially helping youths such as child prostitution or the ultra violent drug trade, there are services that assist teenage prostitutes such as the "Elanor's house" (through the Boys and Girls Club), and other such organizations that protects our young.

but not just limited to at risk youths. During an earlier Civic Camp meet (perhaps the one after the Christmas meet and greet), a camper suggested ways to involve and educate (ie through schools)…

        • Physical Activity (Health)

Workshop on Urban Poling (Nordic walking) which can provide a safe alternative for people - young and old - to get out walking in our parks and neighbourhoods. Provides healthy, inexpensive physical activity and getting people out and about in their communities - starting up walking groups, etc.

Mandy Johnson, Active by Nature, has offered to conduct a free workshop

              • Getting Stuff Done

So much to be done. So little time. How can we as busy people be more effective in influencing decisions on the future of our city? Or better yet take action on our own?

We propose to use the experience of CivicCampers and others to provide the knowledge, tools, and encouragement to make a difference on the issues that concern you. We would provide a station at the open house full of education and energy and, if we can recruit enough helpers, a mini-workshop as well.

                • Paying for Growth

The City of Calgary has to decide how it is going to pay for all the services that our growing city needs and where - in new suburbs or in established areas - it should invest taxpayers' money.

There are many factors to consider:

                  - What services to provide?
                  - Which taxes and user fees to use?
                  - How to fairly distribute the costs?
                  - What benefits will result from development/redevelopment?
                  - How to manage growth more efficiently?
                  - How should the Province & federal government help?

We will provide an enlightening, educational, and hopefully entertaining look at where we…
